The Alabama Hills, on BLM land, are filled with great open campsites.
We pulled in well after dark on a clear night; I shot some photos by moonlight.
Our first morning in the Alabama Hills.
View from near our campsite. The Inyo Mountains are in the background, on the other side of the Owens Valley.
We waited in vain for the sun to light up the peaks of the Sierra, which remained hidden in cloud. For a brief moment, this golden shaft of light found a way beneath the clouds to light up the base of the mountains.
This was the best campsite we found in the Alabama Hills, but shortly after lunch, the wind started howling. The forecast was for more wind and cold, so we packed up and went into town to stay in a motel. We hope to come back and stay in that site again.
I woke up long before sunrise, got out of our motel room bed in Lone Pine, and drove up to the Alabama hills in the dark. The temperature was in the twenties and the wind was blowing, but when the light came it was worth the wait.
